QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FURNITURE
Do the chairs have stripes?
No. The stripes in the photos are shadows cast from natural light entering the windows of the furniture shop. The chairs have the natural wood look of solid oak.
Why does the hickory have white spots?
Hickory furniture does not have white spots but places where bark, when cut away, reveals the wood. Natural hickory used for making stools comes complete with hickory bark. Where a branch has been trimmed off to make a single straight leg, for example, and where the hickory has been cut to be inserted into another piece of wood, the lighter natural color of hickory wood is exposed. The wood comes with a natural finish coat to protect it.
What is the difference between gliders and rockers?
The motion is different. You can imitate the motion with your body. The feel of a rocking chair is like that of bending your body at the hips. Move your upper body forward and back while you bend at the hips. It has the feel of sitting in a swing.
The motion of a glider feels like the motion of moving your upper body forward and back while bending slightly at the knees. It lacks any up and down movement, but flows forward and back, and so is slightly smoother. When it comes to shipping furniture, a glider is heavier.
A swivel glider adds the ability to turn the chair while sitting in it. This feature enables a person to turn in order to visit, watch TV, see something, or adjust the chair to lighting conditions.
Why is hickory used for furniture?
Hickory is one of the strongest woods used in furniture making. It holds up well. It is dense and heavy, but it can be shipped.
MAKING THE FURNITURE
Can any of the furniture be personalized?
You can request a common color for cushions for chairs.
You can specialize your order:
In the shopping cart feature you can select from several choices a particular wood stain for a bent wood rocker, glider, or swivel glider. Adding a cherry stain will increase the price a little bit.
How is oak bent to make bentwood rocking chairs?
Bentwood oak rockers are made from solid oak boards which are soaked, bent while wet, and held in the desired form under pressure until they dry in the desired shape.
How is furniture made without electricity?
Amish furniture shops do use electricity off the power grid. Each farm has a generator that drives a belt. The belt connects to wheels that drive specific power tools such as saws and sanders. Each piece produced is finished by hand with hand sanding and hand application of stains and finishes. Amish daily life follows routines related to sunrise and sunset, so that furniture manufacturing stops by 5 p.m. The Amish honor a life rhythm of work and rest.
